All my best friends are a little broken, all the best people are.
We can hear Quivers oscillating through our music channels today. The skilled guitar pop band from Hobart, Australia (a bunch of mates you can find on facebook all about) has captured my ears via the indie noir “Pigeons” video. This first single comes off the handmade cassettes on bandcamp (different artworks to suit your quirky style). “We’ll Go Riding on the Hearses” is waiting for your love and support before the band’s vinyl release and 2017 tours. The video kicks off with an image from “Mykonos Takeaway” and just as I’m thinking where the heck is this place caring for a midnight music snack, the song creeps on me and I’m swaying in my chair playing the melody with my pencils on the desk. It’s jangling pop for sure, that doesn’t ignore the big issues like death (Sam lost his brother, Tom, in a freediving accident 4 years ago), however it’s a cracked, hung-over realization with an optimism to suit your melancholy. I could love these guys right up with the War on Drugs or Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. If your looking to go road tripping with your ghosts, pissing in the snow (haven’t tried it in the Blue Mountains?), swimming in the phosphorescence and benders with your friends or falling in love in the gutter again you’ve got a soundtrack to get drunk to on your grey nights that will color your memories for all your life. Even Courtney Barnett stated that there is a “handsome voice” with “great lyrics” in the air about this band, and we completely give out our carte blanche on this one!
