Bamako based MC Jazz is
one of Mali’s most prodigious Hip Hop artists. “La Paix”, a previously
unreleased track came together when he visited the studio during
Dirtmusic ‘s 2012 sessions for “Troubles” and “Lion City”. Those were
dark days in Bamako, the military coup was still in effect and a giant
swath of the north of the country was occupied by radical Islamists
touting a severe form of Sharia law that banned the listening to and
playing of music. MC Jazz’s lyrics are shifting between French, Bambara,
Wolof and English. The wordplay is not doctrinaire. It is an inspired
plea for unity and cross-ethnic understanding: “Together, Forever.”’
