Coming Up Roses is an alt-rock/shoegaze trio from Singapore comprised of vocalist-bassist Emily Sera and guitarists Darius Oon & Lorenzo Romero.
Their music feels a bit like Wolf Alice vs The Joy Formidable. Blending together elements of pop, grunge, metal, and shoegaze, the band manifests their emotions throughout Emily’s evocative vocal melodies.
Getting their inspiration from their adolescent experiences, they try to balance the worlds of child-like innocence and idealism with the revelations that come from adulthood. All of us know, the transition is not easy, from being a child to actually taking up on your responsibilities while having to be a “grown-up” is a topic that most find difficult to grasp.
Coming Up Roses seem to be doing just fine though, as in 2018 the band landed a spot at Baybeats Festival, Singapore’s biggest free alternative music fest and their music made a great impact there.
Other highlights of the bands’ repertoire include performing at various events and international festivals such as ASEAN Music Showcase Festival 2020, Music Matters Live 2019, Fred Perry Subculture, and Canadian Music Week 2021.
Fast forward to 2022, with Slingshots being the third single from the bands’ upcoming EP which will be released in May 2022, I can get why there’s so much hype in Southeast Asia, great vocals, nice guitar sounds, and really inspired songwriting.
I’m definitely hooked and will be waiting to hear the full EP once it’s out.
