Summer fun is here for us in the northern hemisphere, as the sun cuts through the looming clouds overhead – having lingered for what seems like an eternity. Along with this shift comes dwi’s ‘Freak N Out’, a head-nodding indie-pop jawn, perfectly suiting the late-night, seasonal aesthetic.
From the gate, a wobbling synth & pocketed groove entrance the listener, while melodies begin to swirl around in helical patterns. The bass lays a powerful framework to be built upon, amidst some genuinely lovely background harmonies, as lead vocals allow a focus on the humanity existing within the core of the spell. A truly refreshing expression of inflections & microtones, often otherwise lost within the modern context of auto tune/ pitch correction, the vox are particularly fantastic, & will keep you listening on repeat.
dwi is otherwise the bassist for Canadian indie rock back The Zolas, & this is the new solo effort born of the pandemic – it seems worth following along on the already exciting adventure:
