Lonely Gimmick AKA Max Pow is an anonymous multi-instrumentalist. While Max (not his actual real name) is making an effort to conceal his identity, he’s being involved in so many music genres that I believe, eventually, we’ll find out who’s the man behind the mask -or instruments in this case.
Hip Hop, Techno, Lofi, Indie, Rock, Punk, and Bedroom Pop are some of the genres, Lonely Gimmick has got his hands on, and seriously, he’s the real deal. except playing most of the instruments heard in tracks, Max takes up the producer role as well, recording, producing, and mixing most of his music.
Lonely Gimmick feels like a statement. There’s no hidden agenda and I believe Max is not hiding behind his anonymity because he’s shy, making music is his passion and he wants to do it without caring about looks, sex, politics, etc.
The track Grumpy Days released on Feb the 4th is a funky – groovy indie rock song with a really nice and happy sound (despite the title). The songwriting is definitely unique and the psychedelic vocal chops remind me of a previous era where the reverb was plenty and the beat strong and fast. The mix is also quite interesting with the vocals taking place in the back and the guitar being in front the whole time. This creates a different dynamic than what we’re used to hearing in today’s pop music.
